Specialist aviation cover

Aircraft insurance should not be a generic product.

Every Aircraft Insurance USA aircraft insurance quote depends on far more than the hull value. Underwriters review the make and model, how the aircraft is used, where it is based, the pilotsโ€™ certificates and ratings, recent flight experience and claims history.

Our job is to turn those details into a clean submission that the major aviation markets can price properly โ€” and to arrange the strongest possible cover for your individual risk.

Aircraft we insure

From a Cessna 172 to a turbine helicopter or a light jet, each aircraft carries its own risk profile and is rated on its own terms.

A fair rating system

We assess the real risk โ€” and price it fairly.

Many Aircraft Insurance USA owners never learn how an aviation premium is actually set. Underwriters weigh three things above all: the aircraft, the pilot, and how the two come together in real operations. A well-maintained aircraft, flown by an experienced and well-trained pilot, earns a better rate.

Recurrent training, type-specific training, additional ratings and a clean claims history can all unlock credits. We make sure those are reflected in your quote.

A

Your aircraft

Make, model, hull value, equipment and use all feed the assessment.

P

You as a pilot

Certificates, ratings, total time, time in type and recent experience count.

F

The operation

How and where you fly, and your training and claims history, shape the rate.

United States ยท FAA framework

Insurance and the FAA: what you actually need.

Unlike Europe, the FAA does not require private aircraft owners to carry insurance to fly legally in the United States. In practice, cover is required by aircraft lenders, by airport and hangar agreements, by flight schools and by rental contracts โ€” and it protects you from serious financial and legal exposure. Commercial operators under FAR Part 135 must meet minimum liability limits filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

US aircraft are registered with the FAA on the N-number register, and registration must be kept current โ€” the term is now seven years. The owner named on your policy should match the FAA record, since a mismatch can complicate a claim. Where an aircraft is financed, the lender is named as loss payee and will require breach of warranty coverage.
91

FAR Part 91

Private and non-commercial operations. No federal insurance mandate, but lender and airport requirements almost always apply.

135

FAR Part 135

Commercial and charter operations must meet minimum liability limits filed with the U.S. DOT.

N

FAA N-number register

US civil aircraft are registered with the FAA; registration is renewed on a seven-year term.

FAQ

Aircraft insurance questions

Is aircraft insurance required by law in the USA?

The FAA does not require private aircraft owners to carry insurance to fly legally. In practice, cover is almost always required by aircraft lenders, by airport and hangar agreements, by flight schools and by rental contracts. Commercial operators under FAR Part 135 must meet minimum liability limits filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

What is breach of warranty (lienholder) coverage?

Breach of warranty coverage is an endorsement that protects your lender, named as loss payee, even if the policy is voided because a warranty was breached โ€” for example an unapproved pilot flying the aircraft. Most US aircraft lenders require it on financed aircraft, because the aircraft is their collateral.

What is the difference between hull and liability insurance?

Hull insurance covers physical damage to your own aircraft, in motion and not in motion. Liability insurance covers injury or property damage you cause to third parties and, where included, to passengers. Most US policies combine both.

What does Combined Single Limit (CSL) mean?

A Combined Single Limit policy provides one overall liability limit covering both passenger injury and third-party bodily injury or property damage, instead of a per-seat sublimit. A smooth CSL with no passenger sublimit is the broadest common structure in US general aviation.

How are aircraft insurance premiums calculated in the USA?

Underwriters review the aircraft make, model and hull value; the pilot's certificates and ratings; total time, time in type and time in the last 12 months; training and claims history; intended use; and where the aircraft is based. Experienced, well-trained pilots in lower-risk aircraft receive better rates.

Do I need to keep my FAA registration current for my insurance to respond?

Yes. US aircraft registration must be kept current with the FAA, and the owner details on your policy should match the FAA record. A mismatch, or a lapsed registration, can delay or complicate a claim. Since 2023 the FAA registration term is seven years.

Can flying clubs and multiple pilots be insured under one policy?

Yes. Flying clubs, partnerships and co-ownership groups can be insured under one policy with named-pilot or open-pilot warranty provisions, with cover extended to each qualifying pilot.

Do flight instructors need their own liability cover?

Certificated flight instructors carry liability exposure when teaching in aircraft they do not own. CFI liability insurance protects the instructor during instruction, separate from the owner's or club's policy.

Are there discounts for training or AOPA / EAA membership?

Often, yes. Many US carriers offer credits for recurrent training such as the FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program, for type-specific training, and for membership of organizations like AOPA or EAA. Providing your membership number when you request a quote can unlock available discounts.

Does my policy cover flights to Mexico, Canada or the Bahamas?

Territorial cover can usually be extended for flights to Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, sometimes on specific terms. Confirm your planned territory when you request a quote so the policy is endorsed correctly.
